Matt Pinfield’s Story

Legendary Radio DJ and MTV VJ, Matt Pinfield began his broadcasting career in 1984. You might remember him from his early days as a Jersey Shore alternative rock DJ, or from his hosting roles on MTV and VH1, or maybe you caught him on that one episode of Portlandia. From anyone’s point of view, Matt was living the good life.

But even the biggest names in our business can face unimaginable hardships. In 2018, Matt was dealt the first of two major medical setbacks when he was hit by a car while crossing the street near his home. The accident left him with a broken leg, a fractured skull, and mountains of medical bills. Fortunately, he was able to recover, but spent most of his savings in the process.

Then, in January 2025, Matt suffered a major stroke. He was placed in a medically induced coma for more than 60 days. As he regained consciousness, Matt faced significant cognitive and physical delays. It was unclear if he would be able to walk again, let alone go back to his broadcasting career.

With no savings left to cover these new medical expenses, Matt’s daughter reached out to the BFOA for help. He was approved for a monthly grant immediately. With this support, Matt started his recovery and began to regain strength and mobility. Miraculously, he is now back on the air with 95.5 KLOS and back doing what he loves.

“The BFOA helped me when I had a massive stroke on January 6, 2025. Without the BFOA’s generosity, help, and support, I don’t know where I would be right now. They care about the people who have been working in our field for so long. I want to give them a lot of love and thank the Broadcasters Foundation of America for their support.”
